I don&#8217;t think I&#8217;m old or wise or experienced enough to really preach to people about art yet&#8230; maybe I&#8217;ll never feel like I am though. Regardless, I didn&#8217;t think there was any harm in sharing something I kind of noticed.</p> <p>See, like I said, I&#8217;ve read a lot of art advice, but nobody told me one thing that I&#8217;ve had to discover for myself and has been vitally important since I did. I figured there was no harm in sharing this little tip with my humble little following. It is as follows:</p> <p>Developing your own art style is not a conscious thing. As it turns out, you can&#8217;t look at the work of your favourite artists and say<em> &#8220;I&#8217;ll take this from that person, and this from that person, and this from that person, and combine it, and it&#8217;ll make the most awesome art style ever!&#8221;</em>. It doesn&#8217;t work that way. I&#8217;ve found out that I actually give my brain much more credit than it deserves (or much less, depending on how you look at it). To develop your own &#8216;style&#8217; (I always feel like putting that word in inverted commas and never know why&#8230;), you don&#8217;t actually have to piece it together in your head. <em>The process is automatic</em>. Artistically, the brain is like a sponge. It will take different bits and pieces from different places, absorb various elements from artwork and artists that you admire, and, eventually, you&#8217;ll start to churn out something that is uniquely yours, but that can be traced in some ways to the art that inspires you most.</p> <p>Therefore, the only way you&#8217;re going to take that most glorified of steps and develop your own style is to stop trying to do just that. Stop thinking about drawing, and just draw. Continue to find new artwork and old artwork from anywhere you can that inspires you, and just let your subconscious absorb it and learn from it. Keep drawing, and it&#8217;ll get processed, and come out in your own work. In short, surround yourself with the art that you love and never stop drawing (or painting, or writing, or directing, or singing, or taking pictures&#8230;), and the rest will take care of itself.</p> <p>This discovery was revolutionary to me. It might be obvious to some, but if there&#8217;s anyone out there who is still struggling along at the beginning of their career, like me, I thought I would save you the hassle of finding it out for yourself. There are other bits of advice that I have (because I spend a lot of time thinking, it may surprise you to find out), such as how you shouldn&#8217;t try and be as good as your heroes, but try to be different&#8230; but I won&#8217;t start handing out advice like that.
